'One way in' traffic plan for Ogle Street

Thursday, 30 October 2008

ROADS Service officials have confirmed they intend to start the legislative process to make Ogle Street a one-way street - in the direction of Thomas Street.
A previous Armagh Council report proposed to make Ogle Street one-way as part of the overall environmental improvement scheme in the city centre.
The study recommended that, to ease congestion in the streets included in that scheme, Ogle Street should become 'one way out' in the direction of Irish Street.
But a council spokesperson said: "Roads Service delivered a presentation to councillors on Monday, October 20, and explained that new traffic modelling information has become available as part of the work to deliver the new link roads around the city.
“We understand that this data supports the case for making Ogle Street 'one way in' as the best option for wider city traffic circulation and the strategic road network.
“Roads Service has advised that the legislative process to make Ogle Street one way in the direction of Thomas Street will now commence, during which the general public will have the opportunity to air their views on the proposed change.
“Roads Service is hosting an information seminar regarding all legislative changes required as part of the environmental improvement scheme on Thursday, November 6, from 2pm to 7pm, in the Market Place Theatre. Armagh City and District Council would encourage all interested parties to attend and put forward their views".
In addition to Ogle Street, Roads Service has said it has been agreed to limit waiting in the disabled parking bays to three hours and to allow loading and unloading in the loading bays for all vehicles.
Said a spokesman: "With regard to the pedestrian zone, it is proposed to allow Market Street and Upper English Street to return to normal vehicular usage.
“The remaining area of the pedestrian zone will allow for access for loading and unloading without the need for a permit.
“It is proposed to implement four types of parking restrictions within the city centre. These restrictions are: no waiting at any time; no waiting or loading at any time; no waiting, Monday to Saturday, 8.30am - 6.15pm; waiting limited to one hour in any two hour period, Monday to Saturday, 8.30am - 6.15pm".
Roads Service staff will also be in attendance at the seminar in the Market Place Theatre. Alternatively, anyone with any comments can email roads.southern@drdni.gov.uk
