A YOUNG County Armagh handball champion knocked down in a suspected hit-and-run incident in Crossmaglen has wakened from a coma.

Twenty-year-old Conall McCavitt had been in an induced coma since he was struck by a vehicle at Cardinal O'Fiaich Square, at around 6.20am on December 27.

Conall has been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

On Wednesday evening, Handball Ireland released a positive update on the condition of Conall, who is regarded as one of the sports "brightest stars".

In a statement, the organisation said: "It's pleasing to report Conall McCavitt is now out of his coma and has spoken to his parents. He remains in intensive care with huge injuries."

A member of Armagh's Eugene Quinn Club, Conall won two world handball titles in 2012. Police arrested a 20-year-old man a short time after the collision on suspicion of a number of motoring offences and he has since been released on continuing bail.
