Kamtekar returns to Armagh thumbnailArmagh Cricket Club have confirmed that veteran Indian professional Indrajeet Kamtekar has signed up with the Mall based outfit again for the 2017 Northern Cricket Union season.

ARMAGH Cricket Club have confirmed that they have secured the services of popular Indian professional Indrajeet Kamtekar once again for the 2017 season.

The veteran Indian professional signed for Armagh last Spring and he was their first professional in a number of seasons.

Kamtekar enjoyed a successful debut campaign with the club last season, but there had been doubts as to whether or not he would be returning to play his cricket on the Mall.

This was down to tightened visa restrictions on overseas professionals in the United Kingdom.

However, club officials confirmed to the Ulster Gazette that he has been signed up for the season and is set to return to the area in mid-April.

“We can confirm that Indrajeet Kamtekar has returned to the club.

“We expect him to be in the area from around the middle of April.

“As well as playing for the 1st XI, he will be out and about in the community working with local primary schools and secondary schools and he will also help to coach our ladies' section."

There had been suggestions in the national media that Section One clubs in the Northern Cricket Union were struggling to secure the services of overseas professionals due to tighter regulations implemented by the United Kingdom Borders Agency.

At a recent meeting between the clubs, seven of the Section One clubs confirmed that they would not be hiring an overseas professional for the 2017 season.

The only three clubs to state that they would attempt to sign overseas professionals were Armagh, Lurgan and Donaghcloney Mill.

This is further good news for the progressive club on the Mall. Back in October their home ground was awarded 'Premier' status for the 2017 season.

That would allow the club to play top-flight cricket and possibly attract inter-provincial cricket games this season.

League officials have also confirmed the opening fixtures of the new Northern Cricket Union season.

Armagh will hope to continue to build upon their successful return to Section One last season with another good season.

They will make the short trip to Derriaghy for their first game of the season on Saturday, April 29.

Armagh will then play their first league game at home on Saturday, May 6 against Academy at their picturesque ground on the Mall.

This season Armagh will field four teams, a 1st XI, 2nd XI, 3rd XI and Midweek League team. They have also entered a team in to the NCU Women's Division 1.
