MARKETHILL man Cyril Walker arrived home to a hero's welcome at the weekend after he triumphed at the Special Olympics Winter Games in Austria by winning two medals - including a Silver!
It was fitting then that the local hero, who represented Team Ireland, was presented with his Silver medal by an action hero of the silver screen - Arnold Schwarzenegger, who took a selfie with the Olympian skier.
Local Special Olympics volunteer, Niamh Withers, who helped fundraise for Team Ireland, said it was a moment that was the "icing on the cake" for 46-year-old Cyril, who won Silver in the novice slalom event and clinched Bronze in the giant slalom category. "It was just absolutely fantastic for him. I asked Cyril what Arnold Schwarzenegger said to him and Cyril said that all he said was 'I'll be back!'," said Niamh. "He was thrilled."
Team Ireland faced competition from 3,000 athletes representing 110 countries on the Alpine slopes, and Niamh says their achievements of bringing home two golds, three silvers and three bronzes was "no mean feat".
