Impressive Mackle retains Joe McVeigh Cup
Thursday, 20 April 2017
ARMAGH native Thomas Mackle retained the Joe McVeigh Cup last Sunday evening after he saw off Killian Kingston in the final.
Mackle went into the final as favourite and rightly so, as the reigning All-Ireland Senior champion.
It was Kingston that won the toss and bowled first, but it was Mackle who put his stamp on the clash as he raced into an early lead.
Kingston responded well to level with his second only to leave odds in the score.
Mackle, produced a stunning shot from the 'Iron Gate' to put himself in a great position to open the corner with his next bowl.
Kingston misplayed his shot to leave Mackle firmly in command, but back came Cork native Kingston, who threw a terrific shot from the 'Crab Tree' to have full sight of the next bend, only trailing by around 40 yards.
It remained nip and tuck right the way to end and both men found themselves going into the cap.
Mackle proved why he is All-Ireland champion when he produced three fine shots close to the finish line and to almost rise two bowls of odds and proved to be a worthy champion once again.
