Shortened Milford footpath defeats purpose say residents

Thursday, 29 June 2017

RESIDENTS of an historic Co Armagh mill village are somewhat concerned by the layout of a 250,000 footpath/cycle track scheme.

As work on the busy A3 Monaghan Road continues questions are being asked as to why the footpath designed to connect Milford village with Armagh is not being extended up to and beyond the village entrance.

"It looks very strange," commented one villager, who simply can't understand why the footpath stops a few hundred metres short of the Milford junction, a noted accident blackspot.

"Anyone you talk to says it's strange.

For years people have campaigned to get this footpath and make this busy and dangerous road safer for pedestrians.

It only goes as far as the Ann Street bus shelter which means a considerable part of the road will still not have a footpath." Local UUP Councillor Sam Nicholson has taken the concerns of the residents on board and has contacted Transport NI to have the footpath extended up to the village entrance.

"I understand there is budgetary pressure on Transport NI in these current difficult economic times, however, in my opinion it would have made more sense both practically and economically if the footpath in this phase of the works extended right to the main entrance to the village.

"It is great that Transport NI have agreed to build a footpath but surely it would make more sense to see the project through and extend it right out." Villagers are certainly not amused.

"The Monaghan Road past Milford can be like a race track. Even with this work going on and speed restrictions in place a number of motorists pay little heed," quotes another.

"Following years of campaigning we are finally getting a footpath but for whatever reason ends well short of the village."
