A community stunned by Robbie’s death thumbnailRobbie Farquhar

WIDESPREAD shock and disbelief has been felt throughout the Richhill area and much further afield following the sudden death of popular village bakery owner, Robbie Farquhar.

Mr Farquhar, who lived at Broomhill, passed away suddenly on Saturday afternoon from a suspected heart attack.

A much loved husband of Sonya and a devoted father to Dean, Scott and Bobby, he was due to have celebrated his 53rd birthday yesterday (Monday).

Mr Farquhar who owned Richhill Home Bakery was highly respected in the village, where he had worked for around 30 years.

In his early years, he had worked at Johnston's Bakery in Armagh, but after acquiring his own business, he went on to supply bread to a number of shops across the area, including Tandragee and Portadown.

Keith Ratcliffe who worked as an apprentice baker with Mr Farquhar for three years when he was a teenager in the early 1990s, said "he always met everyone with a smile on his face".

"Robbie was always laughing and joking.

We had great craic when I was working with him," he told the Ulster Gazette.

"He will be sadly missed around Richhill.

I really enjoyed my time working with him and just can't believe it, as it is so hard to take in.

"He gave me my first start and trained me and I always appreciated that. He was a very hard worker and put a lot of hours into the bakery.

"There is a big hole left in Richhill as he was always out meeting people," he added.

Mr Farquhar was also a talented footballer and had a great love for the sport, having played for a number of teams over the years, including Richhill FC and Annagh United.

He was a great supporter of Richhill AFC and members of the club expressed their condolences to the Farquhar family on social media and described him as "a great character about the village" and a "hard worker for the village".

The club said Mr Farquhar would be "forever in our hearts".

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Lord Mayor, Alderman Gareth Wilson described Mr Farquhar's death as "sad and tragic" and said his thoughts and prayers are with the whole family at this time.
