Shane pitches in for Rooney debut thumbnailMarkethill man in Tanzania to lay pitch ahead of Everton friendly

MARKETHILL man Shane McGeown is set to play an important role in football superstar Wayne Rooney's first match back as an Everton player.

The Toffees fly out to Tanzania today (Tuesday) for a pre-season friendly with Gor Mahia on Thursday and Rooney has told his new club's TV channel that he is looking forward to some time on the pitch.

And if Rooney does make his debut he can rest assured that the pitch will be in perfect condition.

Former Armagh City footballer, Shane McGeown has been in Tanzania for the past five weeks completely re-laying the pitch ahead of, what will be Everton's first ever visit to the African country.

THE pitch was not much more than a dustbowl when Shane arrived. But now Shane and the team from Portadown company Clive Richardson Ltd have transformed it into a surface suitable for top-level professionals to play on.

"It's been quite a job but a very enjoyable one," said Shane. The game marks Everton's new association with gaming giant, SportPesa and the Merseyside club are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring it is a worthy spectacle.

"Everton have had their staff over in Tanzania checking on the progress but I am pleased to say everything has gone well and if Wayne Rooney makes his debut he will do so on a top-level surface.

"We have been made to feel very welcome in Tanzania and I have really enjoyed working with everyone at Everton - for a football fan like myself it's been a great experience." Shane is certainly a man in demand and last summer spent a number of weeks in France overseeing the Republic of Ireland's training pitches for their appearances at the European Championship finals.

He is also a regular fixture at Windsor Park making sure the pitch is in pristine condition for Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland side.
