Loughgall fall to second away defeat thumbnail Loughgall skipper and former Newry player, Stephen Ferguson in action against his former club on Friday night.

LOUGHGALL fell to their second away defeat of the season against a Newry City side picking up their first points of the campaign.

Manager Dean Smith was without the services of Ricky Copeland, who sustained an eye injury in last week's win over Dergview, with Mark Stewart replacing him in central defence.

On six minutes a quick attack from the hosts saw Decky Carville cross to Mark McCabe inside the area however the forward's weak effort was easily saved by goalkeeper Gareth Buchanan.

In the 13th minute Dale Montgomery's whipped free-kick was glanced goalwards by Andrew Hoey however he denied by a smart save from Newry 'keeper Kieran Gordon.

City took the lead on 20 minutes from the penalty spot after Buchanan fouled McCabe inside the area after the speedy forward broke through the Loughgall defence. Stephen Hughes stepped up and sent Buchanan the wrong way from 12 yards.

Loughgall threatened an equaliser two minutes later when Montgomery's free-kick was met by Jordan Baker ahead of the outrushing goalkeeper Gordon however the striker couldn't keep his headed effort on target.

Newry almost doubled their lead when a fantastic strike from 25 yards by the impressive Carville smashed off the crossbar on 29 minutes.

Ten minutes before the break a goalmouth scramble following a Loughgall corner saw Conor Mullen's effort stopped on the goal line and then Jordan Campbell's shot from the rebound deflected onto the post and cleared to safety.

Newry grabbed a deserved second goal before the break when Carville skilfully evaded Jordan Campbell before seeing his left-footed effort parried by Buchanan. The ball fell kindly for Mark Hughes who directed his header into the empty net.

All hope of a Loughgall comeback was quashed on 57 minutes when the home side won the ball in midfield prompting a quick counterattack which culminated in Mark Hughes' netting with a deft chip over Buchanan from inside the penalty area.

The Villagers grabbed a goal back in the 76th minute when substitutes Jamie Douglas and Marc McConnell combined for the latter to sidefoot past Gordon with a great low finish.
