Homeless man donates kidney to the Pastor who took him in thumbnailPastor John Greenaway with Melvin Boyd, the man who donated his kidney to him

A CHANCE conversation in an Armagh book shop led to a homeless man donating a kidney to the pastor who had taken him in.

Belfast man Melvin Boyd (40) had been living in a hostel in the city when he popped into Faith Mission Bookshop to buy a new Bible when he was made aware of the River of Life Healing Centre and Church, based in the wider Moy area, by a shop assistant.

Operated by Pastor John Greenaway and his family, the centre - which holds prayer and healing meetings - offered to help Melvin by giving him a place to stay as well as support.

At the time Pastor Greenaway had been suffering from kidney failure. Praying to God to be healed, he was to discover that his prayers had been answered when he opened up his home to Melvin, who offered to donate one of his kidneys without hesitation when he learned of John's situation months after his arrival. Both of them believe it was God's work that they came to meet each other.

Now nearly 12 months since the transplant operation, John's quality of life has been transformed, with no longer any need to undergo dialysis.

"I've so much love for Melvin... he's the best gentleman I've ever met," said John.

Meanwhile Melvin, who grew up in Rathcoole, said that he has not lost anything but instead gained everything he's ever wanted - all thanks to God answering his prayers.

"I was living on the streets and never had known the love of a family environment," he said. "God gave me a home and a family all in one go."
