Glenavon aiming to tighten grip on third place

Thursday, 15 March 2018

GLENAVON manager Gary Hamilton is targeting full points from his side's two remaining pre-split Danske Bank Premiership fixtures - versus Ballinamallard United at Mourneview Park on Saturday and Dungannon Swifts at Stangmore Park the following Friday night. "We still have a four point lead on Linfield in third place. If we are going to maintain or improve that before the top six play each other again we need to beat both the Mallards and Dungannon," said the Donaghcloney man.
Ballinamallard has significantly strengthened its squad since the clubs' last meeting in November. "Gavin Dykes has brought in some decent players so we are expecting them to cause us a few problems," added Hamilton. "But if we make a positive start to the match there is no reason why we can't win."
Last Saturday Glenavon had to come from behind to take a point in a gripping 2-2 draw with Glentoran. Mark Sykes gave the Blues an early lead. However, the Glens scored twice in three minutes through Curtis Allen and John McGuigan. Then Marc Griffen found the net with a deft header in the 90th minute. "We were the better team, played some great football and could have scored more than two goals," said Hamilton. "But in the end we had to work very hard to share the points."
