FORMER Markethill High School pupil Kyle Marshall has signed up with one of England's top hockey teams for the 2017/2018 season.

Marshall is set to join up with Beeston Hockey Club in Nottingham as part of a sports scholarship with Nottingham Trent University.

The Banbridge Hockey Club player is moving to England in early September where he will study Accountancy and Finance while playing hockey for Beeston in the English Hockey League.

Marshall said he is looking forward to the move to England.

“I believe that the standard won't be too much of a step up from playing in the Irish Hockey League with Banbridge. We had a lot of seasoned internationals in the squad at Banbridge and it will probably be a very similar standard to the Irish Hockey League.

“The only thing I may have to get to grips with is the bigger playing squads and I know I will need to knuckle down and work hard to get game time."

Marshall is taking it one step at a time at the moment and he admitted that his thoughts at the moment are on preparing for the European A Division Championships in Valencia at the end of August.

Ireland have been drawn in Pool B with Germany, England and Austria and they will have their sights on progressing to the knockout stages of the competition.

“Hopefully I can get involved in the Ireland squad for the tournament in Spain.

“My focus will be on getting selected for that squad and then after the tournament I will move over to Nottingham and probably around the first or second week of September I will get started with Beeston."

This season, Marshall played a pivotal role in helping Banbridge to an historic Irish Hockey League and Senior Cup double this season.

The former Armagh Hockey Club player also played European hockey this season at Havelock Park and in Eindhoven where Bann were knocked out in the last 16 back in April.

Beeston Hockey Club, who are based in Nottingham, have secured Marshall's signature for next season and he will join the likes of Team GB and Ulsterman Mark Gleghorne in the panel at Beeston next season.

“This is a great opportunity for me and it isn't really something that I could have turned down.

“It is is a fantastic chance for me to go over and study and play hockey and I will be grasping it with both hands."
