International call ups for RSA players

Thursday, 29 June 2017

Three players from the Royal School Armagh hockey team have been called up for international hockey action with Ireland.

Olivia Berry has been called up for the Ireland U16 squad set to compete at the Six Nations tournament in Barcelona between July 17 and July 23.

Berry will also travel to Scotland on July 7 for three test matches before they head off to Spain for the Six Nations competition.

Ulster Elks and Royal School player Hannah Irwin has been named in the Ireland U21 squad for the EuroHockey Junior Women's Championships in Valencia in August. RSA teammate Alana Doyle has been rewarded for her good form with Ards and the Royal School this season with a call-up to the U21 Development panel.

The girls have also been involved in test series clashes with Wales and Scotland, a series in which Ireland ran out overall winners.

It promises to be an exciting summer for Irwin and Doyle. Ireland's U21s have been drawn in Pool A where they will face the host nation Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The competition takes place between August 28 and September 3

Speaking about the U21 panel head coach David Passmore said there is plenty of potential in the group.

"This is a big group with plenty of young potential and the players have shown a lot of energy.

"There is a lot of hard work ahead as we build to Valencia in August and the Junior World Cup highlighted the fitness levels and technical abilities we will need to achieve to be competitive with so many strong European teams.

"The management team have really been impressed by the application and intent shown by the group and that will stand us in great stead moving forward.

"Our aim is to maximise every individual's ability and collectively become a cohesive and driven group with high standards on and off the pitch".
