NOMINATIONS are now closing for the third annual Live Here Love Here Community Awards and organisers are reminding the people of Armagh to nominate their ‘Community Heroes’ before the deadline on Monday 7th January at 12 noon – ensuring those who give up their time to keep our communities cleaner, greener and safer get the recognition they deserve.

The awards, held at Belfast City Hall on 12th February 2019, will be hosted by Lesser Spotted Journeys/Ulster presenter, Joe Mahon, and are organised by charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful – aiming to celebrate the work of groups and individuals who instil pride in communities across Northern Ireland through environmental action.

Last year the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Litter Heroes Award went to Peter McKernan. Peter, who is 77, is a long standing member of the Banbridge Ramblers hill walking group, he loves the mountains.

On every walk Peter has his rubbish bag and collects a full bag nearly every time. His example percolates through the group and even the most cynical can be seen slipping chocolate wrappers or plastic bottles into a side pocket of the rucksack. He never fails to inspire the rest of the group and with his great example they leave the mountains better than they found them.

Peter McKernan comments: “I was delighted with the award as it gave publicity to the problems we have with litter and plastic in particular being thrown away carelessly. I continue to lift plastic bottles and other rubbish while out walking in the Mournes but I’m heartened as I find less litter than he did a number of years ago.”

Jodie-Ann McAneaney, Live Here Love Here Manager said: “Whether your nominee is a dedicated litter hero, a tourism booster or a neighbourhood champion, now is your chance to say thank you. If you know anyone who is dedicated to keeping our environment healthy make sure you don’t miss the deadline to nominate them and give them the recognition they deserve!”

Entry is free and easy, simply download an application pack from www.liveherelovehere.org, fill out the nomination form and send it to karina.robinson@keepnorthernirelandbeautiful.org before 12 noon on 7th January 2019.
